Your encounter is a lot like many, and if you didn't see the snake again right then, you likely never would again. Living where the snakes do, a sighting is not especially meaningful, it's often just a chance thing that doesn't imply danger beyond that moment - and even then almost always a completely optional encounter. I'm glad you are knowledgeable and cool headed enough to do the right thing, and everyone involved is safe.

My Daughter and I saw a 3 foot diamondback rattler crawling behind the 7 foot retaining wall behind our house returning from the grocery store. We stayed in the car to limit any danger as it crawled into a bush. When I got home and told my Wife she wouldn't let me go back to photograph it. The next day a storm occured and I wondered what had happened to the snake. Earlier today while the pool guy was performing maintenace on our pool I began telling him about the snake encounter. As I'm saying goodbye in the front of the house my Wife and Daughter come screaming there is a big rattlesnake on our back patio; sur enough there he was about 3 feet just cruising across the patio. We have dogs but they were in the house to not intefer with the pool guy while he was working. I placed it in a large trash container with my snake stick and relocated him about 1/4 mile up near a water tower where I believe there is some isolation and food away form our residential area. I'm a previous herper so I was careful however, I'll be even more cautious now that after 2 years I've finally ran into one.

Generally, no. In this case, since we are VERY familiar with the exact original capture site and the snake has not been in contact at all with other populations, it's the best thing for this snake.

Is that wise? If the snake has been captive for some time, and fed and watered, can it readapt to the wild?

haha, I have enough gophersnakes. Last night I was called out to catch a snake that came up through a drain, and it ended up being a really nice, black, Mexican kingsnake. I think I might keep that one.
